Luisa Lee (UP ISSI’s head of Training and Entrepreneurship Education Division), Dr. Fidel Nemenzo (UP ISSI OIC), Joel Cruz (DTI-HRAS director), Meilou Macabare (DTI-Samar provincial director), Doris Caparos and Hazel Joyce Doplito (DTI-HRAS staff).

UP ISSI and the Department of Trade and Industry – Human Resource and Administrative Service (DTI-HRAS) joined forces to spearhead the capability-building training seminar, Small Business Counselors’ Course (SBCC), in Tacloban City last 8-12 August 2016.

A total of 43 key personnel from the Region 8 offices of DTI graduated from the said seminar, which aimed to enhance the competence of the participants to address the business needs of micro, small and medium enterprises in the region.  The SBCC training seminar is a “continuing certification journey of DTI’s business counselors”, which started last year, wherein UP ISSI was tapped to provide the training exclusively for DTI.

In the latest run of SBCC in Tacloban, the participants were divided into groups, and each presented the final output, the Enterprise Assessment Plan, where they assessed the four key function areas (marketing, operations, human resources and finance) of the enterprise assigned to them.  This was where they were made to “Take action!” (DTI’s recurring mantra) and not just learn things in a classroom setting.

Joel R. Cruz, DTI-HRAS director; Manuel Calero, executive director of the Leyte Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Dr. Fidel R. Nemenzo, UP ISSI officer-in-charge, served as evaluators during the critiquing of the participants’ final outputs.
