To keep abreast of the new trends in libraries and information sciences, the Information and Public Affairs Office (IPAO) of the UP ISSI organized a library tour held last 10 September 2018 in UP Diliman. Among the UP Diliman libraries, the IPAO staff visited the UPD Main Library (Main Library), Third World Library, and the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED) Library. The Deputy University Librarian, Ms. Elvira B. Lapuz, toured the IPAO staff to various functional and reader’s services sections and explained the operations of the various sections of the Main Library. In addition, Ms Lapuz advised IPAO staff to consider the type of collection and information users in organizing a special library like UP ISSI’s. Since the UP ISSI Library, with the new College Librarian at the helm, is currently undergoing reorganization, Ms. Lapuz has signified the intention of the Main Library to extend its services in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of the new system.
Aside from the Main Library, IPAO staff visited one of the functional special libraries in UP Diliman, the NISMED Library. Ms. Cherry A. Velasco, the Head Librarian, discussed the organization of the library’s collection in which she gave emphasis on their special collection, namely: theses, memorabilia, proceedings of training conducted, annual reports and records of NISMED. As part of the NISMED library’s preservation, Ms. Velasco discussed their digitization project including access to these collections. In the later part of her discussion, she suggested for UP ISSI to establish close coordination with the Main Library to comply with the standard library procedures and practices of the UP Diliman.
Consequently, the library tour of the UP ISSI’s IPAO staff served as a point of reference in drawing plans and activities for the UP ISSI Library.
