UP ISSI team explores accord with La Union offices

University of the Philippines Institute for Small-Scale Industries (UP ISSI) team initiated exploratory meetings with the Provincial Government of La Union and other offices in the province last May 8 – 9, 2023. 

Along with Office of the Provincial Governor, UP ISSI conducted meetings to explore and forge possible partnerships with the Department of Trade and Industry – Region 1, LORMA Colleges – Basic Education Schools, and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office. 

The UP ISSI staff led by University Extension Specialists Ms. Joanna Rose T. Laddaran and Jake A. Villanueva who are both natives of La Union presented to Gov. Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David the different training and extension programs of the institute in line with La Union’s vision to be the heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.

As highlighted in the Provincial Government of La Union Facebook Page post, Gov. Ortega-David “affirmed her continuous support in collaborating with stakeholders as representatives from the University of the Philippines Institute for Small-Scale Industries (UP ISSI) paid a courtesy visit”

Ms. Angela Grace Peralta, Asst. Head of Local Economic Enterprise and Investment Promotions Unit of PGLU, and Ms. Agnes Grace Cargamento, Provincial Administrator and Office-in-charge in the Office of Provincial Agriculturist, joined the meeting. 

Moreover, Ms. Peralta invited the UP ISSI team to have a product tour and evaluation in the PasaLUbong Center which promotes and sells the local products of the province. She emphasized that through this, they are supporting 45 MSMEs and are promoting 285 types of products.

To develop a culture of entrepreneurial mindset among the youth, the team also presented its training programs including the DSIK Micro Business Game to the faculty of LORMA led by Director Elizabeth R. Camara.

In addition, the team also visited DTI – Region 1 Office headed by the Regional Director Grace Falgui-Baluyan where they discussed possible collaborations in the future with the agency especially the conduct of Small Business Councilors Course which UP ISSI provides in different regions of the country. 

“We hope that through this activity we can develop and implement capacity-building training programs that will help promote the resilience and sustainability of MSMEs in the province,” said Laddaran during the interview.
