UP ISSI joins APO Conference on Productivity Gainsharing in Lao PDR

A University Extension Specialist staff from the University of the Philippines Institute for Small-Scale Industries (UP ISSI) recently participated in the “Productivity Gainsharing for Rural Development” conference in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Held on 2-3 October 2024, the event was organized by the Lao National Productivity Organization and the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Promotion Agency under the Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The conference gathered experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the Asia-Pacific region to explore policies and innovative practices aimed at advancing sustainable rural development through productivity gainsharing models. This event was significant for UP ISSI, as it aligned with its mission to enhance the resilience of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippines, particularly those in rural areas and the Agri-Aqua-Natural Resources (AANR) sector.

The participants from the Philippines included Ms. Ashley May Alison M. Monsanto (Development Academy of the Philippines), Mr. Bryle F. Barrios (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority), Dr. Jerome C. Orate (Provincial LGU-La Union), Charlie R. Razo (Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement, PRRM), Mr. Joselito A. Tambalo (PRRM), Mr. Franz Allan A. Visitacion (Department of Labor and Employment, DOLE), Ms. Queen Therese D. Espinas (DOLE), Deputy Administrator Ray R. Elevazo (Cooperative Development Authority, CDA), Mr. Jefhtee R. Panganiban (CDA-MIMAROPA) and Ms. Janelle Faye B. Tanudtanud (UP ISSI).

Throughout the two-day conference, Ms. Tanudtanud participated in sessions covering foundational theories and case studies of productivity gainsharing and specialized discussions on the digital transformation in agriculture. These sessions highlighted the importance of applying gainsharing frameworks to boost rural economies and social structures. Case studies, such as Malaysia’s Jeruk Madu Pak Ali agribusiness initiatives and Lao PDR’s handicraft and silk industry, offered practical examples adaptable to different socio-economic and environmental contexts. This participation underscored UP ISSI’s dedication to promoting MSME development in rural communities through innovative strategies and contributed valuable insights into addressing unique challenges in the Philippines.

Ms. Tanudtanud returned with enriched knowledge and actionable insights and strategies to support sustainable development and economic revitalization in Philippine rural communities. This aligns with UP ISSI’s broader mission of fostering resilience and economic growth of MSMEs within the country and extending to the Asia-Pacific region.
